Sustainable mobility has become a major issue in our society, with a direct impact on the environment and quality of life. To mark European Mobility Week, AXEM Technology, a committed company, is encouraging its employees to adopt more environmentally-friendly modes of transport. This article takes a closer look at AXEM Technology 's initiatives to promote green mobility among its workforce.

What is "Mobility Week"?

European Mobility Week, held every year from September 16 to 22, aims to raise awareness among citizens and businesses of the challenges of sustainable mobility, and to encourage the use of environmentally-friendly modes of transport: public transport, car-sharing, cycling, etc.

On the occasion of this event several governmental and associative actions are carried out to encourage everyone to get around with greener modes of transport. In September 2018, during the 17th edition, nearly 3,000 European local authorities took the initiative to integrate sustainable mobility into their streets! The Netherlands, Austria and Spain were generally the most represented countries in terms of the number of towns taking part in the event.

Each year, a theme is chosen for all participating European countries. Over the years, the themes have evolved to reflect new environmental issues and concerns. The theme of this year's edition (2023) is "Save Energy". The main aim of this theme is to encourage Europeans to favor walking, cycling and other active modes of travel as their main means of transport in urban areas.

The challenges of green mobility

Green mobility is crucial to meeting the challenges of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion. It should be noted that business travel plays a significant role in this balance, as it accounts for a significant proportion of a company's carbon footprint. For example, according to the latest available data from government reports on the environment, 54% of road traffic emissions are generated by private vehicles. The vast majority of these vehicles are used to commute to work, and account for more than half (51%) of all emissions from the transport sector.

Adopting sustainable modes of transport offers tangible benefits. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it can also have a direct impact on people's health.

According to a WHO article dated December 19, 2022, transport-related air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health. In 2019, 99% of the world's population lived in places where recommended air quality thresholds were not met.

Outdoor air pollution in cities and rural areas was responsible for 4.2 million premature deaths per year worldwide, largely due to exposure to fine particles emitted by combustion vehicles. This pollution is associated with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as cancer.

People living in low- and middle-income countries bear a disproportionate share of this burden, with 89% of these premature deaths. To reduce these health risks, it is essential to promote cleaner modes of transport, such as public transport, walking, cycling and low-emission vehicles.

In addition, it is important to emphasize that green mobility can help to alleviate traffic congestion. Efficient public transport systems and incentives to use shared travel modes can reduce traffic congestion.

Ultimately, promoting green mobility isn't just about protecting the environment. It also improves the quality of life of citizens, reduces the costs associated with health problems and promotes more efficient urban travel.

AXEM Technology supports its employees in adopting sustainable mobility

Green mobility allowance

To encourage its employees to opt for environmentally-friendly means of transport, AXEM Technology introduced a green mobility bonus a few years ago. This bonus financially rewards those who choose environmentally-friendly modes of travel, such as cycling, public transport or carpooling. This financial incentive motivates employees to reconsider their commuting habits.

AXEM Technology has seen a 150% increase in the number of employees using bicycles to get to work in 2023 compared with 2022 - a great success!

Infrastructure for a smooth transition

To facilitate the transition to sustainable modes of transport, AXEM Technology has set up a shower room in the workplace, as well as a secure area for parking bicycles. These initiatives enable employees who opt for cycling or walking as a means of transport to start their day in the best possible conditions, and to keep their bikes safe.

Fleet development

To reduce its environmental impact, the company is also gradually replacing all its internal combustion vehicles with hybrids. This move demonstratesAXEM Technology 's commitment to sustainable mobility and sends out a strong message about its environmental responsibility.

For European Mobility Week, AXEM Technology is positioning itself as an inspiring example of a company committed to promoting sustainable mobility. Through concrete measures, the company is encouraging its employees to make environmentally-friendly mobility choices. By adopting such practices, AXEM Technology contributes to a cleaner, healthier future for all. Let's work together to protect our environment.
